Intense Shamanic Work

One question about shamanic work that has been on my mind is “Intense Shamanic Work – Does the intensity matter?“. Does it matter if I approach the work in a light-hearted way or should it always be done at the fullest intensity that I can muster?  Do I get a “better” result if I’m at the point of  full crisis in comparison to a situation where I’m thinking that would be nice?

So what are my thoughts on this?

  • The work needs to be approached with respect. Spiritual work is not a joke, a laugh or something that is entertaining for the sake of that alone. Spiritual work can be funny, hysterical and enjoyable as it is part of the full range of emotions.
  • Spirit knows what is best for me and works for the best result for me. At times that can be fun and at times it may be difficult.
  • Sometimes I use laughter or don’t take things seriously as a cover for trying to avoid the work I need to do. I do think that Spirit see right through this and at some point will challenge this behaviour.
  • The way Spirit works with each of us is a reflection of who we are. A small tap on the shoulder may produce the result for one person where someone else may need a full-blown slap in the face to get the result. What is important is the result and the change not how we got there.
  • Each of us has our own personal story. What may be easily overcome without trauma by one, may be the most traumatic event for another. In shamanism, it is very much what that individual needs and their story, not something based on another judgement of them.
  • On a personal level I’m quite an intense person and so will be drawn to intense experiences both for myself and when working with others. For me this intensity increases the power and depth of the experience.

The challenge when working with clients is finding what is right for them. The key is always that it is Spirit led. It is up to Spirit to determine the work that is done. This is done through me as the practitioner. So as a practitioner I need to be working with Spirit and following the guidance I receive. Flexibility is the key for me as a practitioner to follow what I’m guided to do.

When I’ve journeyed on this question (practicing what I preach :-)) I got an interesting response. What came through was that placing the work in part of a deeper ritual would enable the individual ,on the receiving  end of the work, to get to the place where they needed to be. And therefore receive the blessings or healing they were due to receive. Providing calm space and ritual before we undertake healing work would allow for a deeper expression of the issue to be addressed. This then would create a clearer request of Spirit for the work to be done. This would be a more intense experience.

This level of intensity is not for everyone, as it may not be the right thing to do for some. Keeping things light and breezy is the best thing for some and if you feel that’s you I would very much encourage you to do that.  I also know that for some they are looking for or are drawn towards a more full on experience. In the shamanic world it is about choosing or being drawn to the work that is right for you at that point in time.

The conclusion that I came to about intense shamanic work is that it makes no difference to Spirit as Spirit works in many ways. It does make a difference to me as a person and as a practitioner as it is a reflection of my personality and so shows through my shamanic work.
